Petru Bîrlădeanu (1977–26 May 2009) was a Romanian musician and citizen who emigrated to Italy in the hope of a better life. He used to earn a living by playing the accordion on the carriages of the Cumana railway in Naples, always accompanied by his wife Mirela.
On 26 May 2009, he was killed in a shooting at the Montesanto Cumana station: shot in the chest and leg, he lay dying amongst the turnstiles blocking access to the platforms and died because he did not receive immediate medical assistance.
His ‘accidental’ death was the result of a feud between local clans, namely the Mariano-Elia-Lepre and the Ricci-Sarno clans. On that late afternoon, eight people on motorbikes were riding along Via Pignasecca, firing bursts of shots into the air to demonstrate their control over the area.
Following various investigations, officers from the Naples Mobile Squad arrested Marco Mariano, a former boss of the Quartieri Spagnoli.
In March 2012, the trial against Petru Bîrlădeanu’s killers concluded, resulting in the sentencing of Mario Ricci, Salvatore and Maurizio Forte (members of the Sarno clan) to 30 years’ imprisonment.
To this day, the memory of Petru Bîrlădeanu is honoured through cultural and social initiatives aimed at promoting values such as the rule of law, solidarity and justice. Among these is the Italian as a Second Language (L2) library at the University of Naples Federico II, inaugurated on 8 October 2010 and dedicated to the Romanian musician.
