His flower drawings carry an emotional meaning that belies their seemingly cheery aesthetic. Indeed, in 2005 the artist revealed that his smiling Flowers, with their vibrant colors and playful designs, conceal hidden tears because they are a manifestation of the repressed emotions and collective trauma experienced by Japanese residents after the 1945 Hiroshima-Nagasaki bombings. The artwork Flowers conveys a message that transcends its visual appeal, serving as a poignant reminder of a tragic event. It reflects the resilience and fortitude of the Japanese people, who are able to smile in the face of adversity while never forgetting the trauma they have endured.
